What does it take to be a part of Mississippi State Guard?

Any citizen of the United States at least 18 years of age is eligible for enlistment in the MSSG. However there are restrictions, you cannot have any felony conviction and cannot be a member of the Armed Forces of the United States, active, reserve or National Guard.

The MSSG is a military unit consisting of enlisted personnel and officers. Each are required to take an oath of enlistment or office respectively.

There is no contractual time limit when joining, however continued membership is contingent upon completion of required training and satisfactory participation.

Units meet monthly, usually for one day on Saturday, but sometimes depending on requirements, both Saturday and Sunday.

You will undertake various military as-well-as emergency management training depending on your assigned duties.

Each year, generally in the spring or early summer, the entire MSSG comes together for Annual Training which is an intense 5-day training period where we practice and refine the developed skills when called upon to assist our fellow citizens in time of need.

To receive a commission as an officer, you must have held a commission in the armed forces of the United States, or officer candidates must possess a four-year degree from an accredited institution of higher learning, and possess skills and education required by the MSSG. Candidates with no prior military service must complete Initial Entry Training (IET) and successfully pass the Officer Candidate Course prior to commissioning.

The MSSG is a volunteer, self-funded, self-equipped military unit which means you will be responsible for purchasing the required uniforms and equipment needed for deployment.

As a member when you have completed the required training, you must be willing and available to deploy anywhere in the state when ordered to do so by the Adjutant General. When called, you will be eligible to receive State Active Duty pay and travel allowance as stipulated in the Mississippi Code.

As a member, you are required to meet military grooming and uniform standards at all times when on duty. You will also be responsible under The Mississippi Code of Military Justice and required to render all military honors and courtesies and follow the orders of those appointed over you.

Being part of the Mississippi State Guard is a privilege as-well-as an honor to be able to assist our fellow citizens during their most vulnerable times following any type of disaster. If you have the desire to learn new skills and assist others, please fill out the Contact Request Form and we will contact you to get the process started.
